Over time, the grout on your tile floor can become dirty and can affect the way the entire floor looks. Fortunately, you can get the tile grout clean and back to its original beauty using things like baking soda, a pencil eraser, shaving cream, a steam cleaner, and oxygenated bleach.
Sweep and mop the floor before you begin, and let it completely dry. Pour a little baking soda into a bowl. Add some water and mix until you have a baking soda paste. Start out adding a little water at a time until it is the right consistency.
Dip an old toothbrush in the paste, and scrub the tile grout with it. Keep scrubbing until all dirt comes off the grout.
If you still have dirty grout, use a pencil eraser to remove it. If you have a lot of stains, purchase some larger hand erasers at a craft store. Rub over the dirty grout until it becomes clean. When you are finished, sweep your floor to remove any eraser remnants.
Shaving cream makes a great cleaner. Make sure you use the shaving cream that comes in a can and not the gel kind. Cover one area of the dirty grout at a time with the shaving cream, and let it sit for 30 minutes. After this time, scrub the shaving cream off, and the grout should be clean. Continue doing this until all of the grout is clean.
Rent a steam cleaner to clean your grout. This works very well and is easy to do. The steam cleaner you rent should come with instructions on how much water and cleaner you need to add. If not all the dirt comes up the first time, go over it a second time and the grout should be clean. While you have your steam cleaner, go ahead and clean your furniture and carpets.
Powdered bleach, also known as oxygenated bleach, works well at cleaning grout. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to mix the bleach with water. Pour the bleach on the tile grout so it is completely saturated, and let it sit for 30 minutes. If the bleach gets on the tiles it will not hurt them. Use a hand scrub brush to clean the grout, and then rinse the area with fresh water.
Once you get your grout clean, keep it this way by sealing it. If you do not want to do this yourself, contact a tile contractor like AW Eurostile who can do this for you.
