## Find Out How To Figure Out How Many Shingles To Get For Your Roof

If you've decided to reshingle your own roof, the first thing you need to know is how much material you are going to need. You don't want to run out of shingles halfway through the job, nor do you want to end up with a lot of shingles left over after the job. That's just a waste of your money. So, how do you get a good idea of how many shingles you should buy? Well, among other things, you are going to have to do a little bit of math.

Measure the Roof

Measuring your roof isn't necessarily as easy as just getting up there with a measuring tape and measuring the length and width. You will need to measure each plane of your roof. On a simple roof, you may only have two roof planes, the front and back. However, the more complicated your roof is, the more planes you will have. You will need to have the legnth and width of each and every plane. Measuring your roof should be at least a two person job in order to get it done right. That way one person holds the measuring tape at the start, and the others person can take the tape to the other end. Make sure that you write down all the numbers, even if you are positive that you will remember them.

Do a Little Math

Now it's time for the math part of the program. You are going to need to find the area of each plane of the roof. To do that, you are going to need to multiply the width times the length of each of the planes of your roof. When you have figured out the area of each section of the roof, add all those numbers together. That will give you the entire area of your roof.

The next bit of math you will need to do is to divide the total square footage of your roof by 100. This number will give you the number of squares your roof is. Generally, if you are going to use 3-tab shingles, you are going to need three bundles of shingles per square.

If you are a big do-it-yourselfer, you may consider reshingling your roof on your own. Knowing how to figure out how many shingles you are going to need will make the job easier and keep you from wasting time and money. Of course, you could always hire a roofing company, like D.S. Bahr Construction, Inc., and let them do everything for you.
